An Immensely Entertaining Origin Story
Shazam! is a breath of fresh air in the comic genre. The film is a dynamic celebration of the fantasy of childhood. Mixed with spoonfuls full of heart, humor and adventure. We have become so used to thematically dark scenarios. Shazam! reminds us how fun it can be to be a superhero and with the daunting responsibilities that accompany him. Adults and children will smile all the time leaving the theater.
Shazam! has several deadlines, but the majority of the plot takes place in modern day Philadelphia. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is a 14-year-old orphan who fled from foster homes. He is obsessed with finding his biological mother. After another incident with the cops, the state entrusts him to Victor (Cooper Andrews) and Rosa (Marta Milans) Vasquez. Products of the system themselves, they engender a diverse brood of five abandoned children.

Sandberg ( Annabelle: Creation ) and screenwriter Henry Gayden correct the ills of adolescence. Billy and Freddy have a day on the field with the new powers. These scenes are absolutely hilarious. They are like children in the candy store, until stomach pain sets in. Their shenanigans have consequences. Billy learns that incredible power must be used wisely, not just to charge cell phones and create social media videos. The journey of his hero accompanies a dose of maturity. This is an uplifting transformation brilliantly interpreted by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi.
The most important aspect of the film is the emphasis on the family. Shazam! is at the heart of the story of an orphan who finds love and acceptance. Billy is a troubled teenager who is unreservedly accepted by the Vasquez family. They provide him with the foundation to reach greatness. This looks very bad, but is done very intelligently. Shazam! never turns into melodrama. He is lively and entertaining with a lot of heart along the way.
Shazam! will not take you away with special effects and epic battle scenes. There is a lot of action, but it fits in the context of the story. The battles between Zachary Levi and Mark Strong are intense, but equally funny and thrilling. Shazam! keeps the humorous tone of the punches. This light approach means that the duels are the least wild of the extended DC universe. Zack Snyder does not have the broken neck here. This is a reference Man of Steel for you neophytes.
Shazam! is a guaranteed pleasure of the crowd. It's an extremely entertaining original story, the most family-friendly DC movie ever. Zachary Levi was an inspired casting choice. His childish charisma adds such credibility to Shazam! . Warner Bros. eliminates the gloom that has affected the CUSD. There are two more scenes during the credits.
