Disney Rehires James Gunn to Write & Direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3
James Gunn is back at his original place. Disney and Marvel studios reportedly rehired Gunn as director of The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 . The filmmaker was fired from the project last summer after a series of offensive old tweets resurfaced online. This put Disney in a precarious situation and they chose to remove Gunn from the project. However, after months of waiting to know who might be called to direct the sequel, the film takes its turn and returns to the hands of Gunn.
According to a new report, after several meetings with Alan, president of Disney Horn Studios, James Gunn was re-hired. The decision was not taken lightly and was finally made considering how Gunn handled the consequences of the situation, sincerely apologizing for his old comments and assuming full responsibility for his comments. Another key factor is that Gunn has never had any behavior that he has evoked in these old tweets, namely an attempt at humor on topics such as pedophilia. The comments were made years ago and were discovered by conservative bloggers who did not agree with Gunn's frank political views on social media.
Reinstatement would have been confirmed, although not publicly, by the representatives of Marvel and James Gunn. This is certainly good news for many fans, as well as for the actors. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and especially Dave Bautista have all been very critical of Disney for sending Gunn back to first place. The entire main cast wrote an open letter asking that he be reinstated, which at the time seemed to fall in the ear of a deaf man. Many others in Hollywood have also defended Gunn. A fan petition also circulated last year and garnered thousands of signatures for the reinstatement of Gunn.

Curiously, James Gunn was hired by Warner Bros. as a result of the situation at Disney to write and direct Suicide Squad 2, now under the title The Suicide Squad which will come into production later this year and will be published in 2021. It would appear that Gunn will still direct his adaptation of DC, then it will return to Guardians of the galaxy, vol. 3 once its commitments are complete. So, Gunn will firmly stand in both camps, which adds a fascinating extra touch to all of this.
Marvel has been quiet about his plans with Guardians 3 in recent times. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that they would still use James Gunn's scenario, but no production schedule was set. Originally, the film was set to shoot in January of this year. Another interesting note in this new report is that the studio apparently did not meet any other director for the post, despite some rumors circulating.
This means that we will probably not see . The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for a while, but since James Gunn is the man who made this franchise what it is by writing and directing the first two installments, it certainly seems better to wait. And it's pretty amazing that Disney gives him a second chance. We will keep you informed as soon as all details are available. This news has been reported for the first time by Deadline.
