Mindy Kaling & Emma Thompson Take on a Talk Show
Amazon released the first trailer of Late Night . The film was written and stars Mindy Kaling ( The Office The Mindy Project ) as a new writer of a popular talk show hosted by Emma Thompson, winner of an Oscar. This premiere was presented at Sundance earlier this year and sparked a lot of excitement at the festival 's release, prompting Amazon to spend a lot of money. We now have our first glimpse of what was $ 13 million just for US rights.
The trailer depicts the central conflict at the heart of the film; Katherine brutal and old school of Emma Thompson against the new Molly with bright eyes, played by Mindy Kaling. Katherine mercilessly dismisses several of her employees just before Molly enters the fold of what she assumes to be her dream job. This then turns into a quest to prevent the Thompson character from losing her job of a popular talk show host.
Late Night centers on Emma Thompson as Katherine Newbury, a pioneer and legendary host on the late-night talk show circuit. Things change when she is accused of being a "woman who hates women". Shortly after, she listed positive action on the to-do list and Molly is committed to being the only woman in her author's room. Molly enters an ugly situation while Katherine faces bad grades, the network wishing to replace her. Molly then begins to prove that she's not just a diverse rookie, but is determined to help Katherine revitalize her show and her career while making even greater change.
Amazon had already spent a lot of money for The Big Sick coming out of Sundance ($ 12 million) and it worked pretty well because the movie was a big critical hit and won an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Mindy Kaling based his screenplay on some of his own experiences in Hollywood. In an interview with Variety, Kaling explained that she did not want to paint anyone in this film as evil.
"Obviously, I'm doing a comedy film, so things are exaggerated for comic effects, but things like that happened to me in my career, it's not so much people as I in the film are fanatical, they have just been protected by the status quo, and each of these people in the film is changing, they are evolving. "
Up to now, critics have generally reacted kindly, as the comedy currently holds a 76% approval rating on rotten tomatoes. Nisha Ganatra is in the director's chair. The rest of the cast includes Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O'Hare, Reid Scott and Amy Ryan. Is this our first look at an Oscar nominee for next year? We will have to see how that goes. Late Night should be released in the theater on June 7th. Be sure to watch the new trailer for the YouTube channel of Amazon Studios below.
