Rise of Skywalker Image Shows How Old Leia Footage Has Been Digitally Altered
With a new picture, we have a much better idea of how Leia will become a reality in The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, Carrie Fisher passed away in December 2016 and did not have the chance to come back as Leia and complete this new trilogy, as originally planned. Fortunately, Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams did not re-cast the role, nor did they want to try to give it life thanks to a computer-generated image, as with Tarkin in Rogue One . But Leia will be part of the movie and we now have an idea of how it will work.
Vanity Fair recently produced a cover story on Star Wars: The rise of Skywalker which says a lot about the long-awaited payment of the long franchise dated. A photo shows composer John Williams working on the score, with an image of General Leia on a projection screen in the background. A Redditor named u / Dentface focused specifically on this part of the image and enlarged it. Although not perfect, it offers a window on how J. J. Abrams and the digital effects team are going to get out of it.
The plan in question, zoomed in on Carrie Fisher, appears to be a re-used version of a plan taken from the end of . when Leia said goodbye to Rey while she went to get Luke. Here we can see that the photo has been modified to give Leia a slightly older look, with different hair and outfit. This has surely been accomplished through some kind of digital cinema magic, but the plan itself seems to match that of episode VII.

Originally, when it was It was revealed that Leia would always appear, fans were asking many questions. All we knew was that Lucasfilm would use unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. It is quite possible that this will extend to alternate shots that have actually been shot in these movies, as opposed to things that end up in the editing room.
Let's hope, J.J. Abrams can find a way to remove this so that everything looks natural. It would not be correct not to have Leia in this movie, but it certainly would not be good for anyone else than Carrie Fisher to play the role. We will see how all this will happen when Star Wars: The Advent of Skywalker will be released on December 20.
