Steve Carell Gets Political in New Jon Stewart Comedy
Focus Features released the first trailer for Irresistible . This is the latest from director Jon Stewart, better known as the former host of Comedy Central The Daily Show . This serves as Stewart's follow-up to his 2014 film Rosewater . Although his latest effort also seems to be politically charged, he manages to mix humorously with political commentary, which is very fashionable for him. It certainly didn't hurt the business he brought to Steve Carell ( The Big Short The Office ) and Rose Byrne ( Instant Family Bridesmaids ) for what seems to be a topical look at modern politics.
The trailer sees Steve Carell as a political strategist trying to help position the Democratic Party for a victory. We see that he intends to use a former Wisconsin military general as a way to convince rural voters by running for the post of mayor. The Republicans realize this and it becomes a chess match, filled with comments on modern politics, but with a lot of laughter launched for good measure. Rose Byrne has a specific dynamic with Carell that creates fun moments. It sounds like the kind of movie that can generate a lot of conversation, make a point or two, and be entertaining at the same time.
Jon Stewart jumped by The Late Show with his old friend Stephen Colbert to debut the trailer, which falls in the middle of the Trump Impeachment lawsuit. Stewart's voice, for many, is missed in today's political climate. While he may no longer be behind a desk hosting a day-to-day talk show, a film like this helps put his voice back in the world in a way that seems make use of his best sensitivities. Stewart, in addition to directing, also wrote the screenplay.
The cast also includes Oscar winner Chris Cooper ( A beautiful day in the neighborhood American Beauty ), Topher Grace ( The 70s Show BlacKkKlansman ) ,, Natasha Lyonne ( Russian Doll American Pie ), Mackenzie Davis ( Terminator: Dark Fate Blade Runner 2049 ), CJ Wilson ( Manchester By the Sea The Looming Tower ) and Will Sasso ( Modern Family The Three stooges ). Jon Stewart's previous film, Rosewater was released in 2014 and, despite largely positive reviews, only grossed $ 3 million at the box office. Irresistible certainly seems to have more commercial appeal.
The film will be released in theaters just before the summer season and will face fairly significant direct competition. Fast & Furious 9 The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Artemis Fowl and Wonder Woman 1984 all come out here week on each side. It might make some crowded box office footage, but it could also offer something for moviegoers who aren't interested in big summer blockbusters. Irresistible should be released in theaters on May 29 in Focus Features. Don't forget to check out the new trailer as well as the clip The Late Show .
